This is the first week of the G5 Gurus group of five predictions, so we will spend a bit of time explaining how our prediction process works.  Each member of the G5 Gurus panel is polled to pick the winner of each game, if the winner will cover the point spread, and if the total points scored in the game will be over or under the line established by betting experts.

In reviewing the table, you will see the consensus picks from the G5 panel.   For games with no line (Vegas does not provide a betting line for games with FCS opponents), the cell will be blank.    Finally, if there is a star to the far right, it means that pick is a Golden Guru pick.  All members of the panel fully agreed with the winner, spread, and over/under.  You will notice, the Gurus are a finicky bunch and did not totally agree on any game fully this time.

Week one features some exciting and compelling matchups.  Our predictions for the top ten games in this opening slate begins with App State over East Carolina with App State covering the 10-point spread and the points total being over.  The Gurus see UCF beating Boise in a marquee matchup, covering the spread and points under the very high 70-point line.   The Gurus believe Georgia State will win at home over Army, covering the spread and points being under.   We see Navy upsetting Marshall at home with the Navy offense grinding up yards and clock leading to a lower scoring game (under on points).

We believe Texas Tech will eke out a win over Houston and cover the 1.5-point spread.   While the Gurus believe Texas will handle Louisiana, but will not cover the 9-point spread, with points being under.  The Gurus are predicting Nevada to upset California.  Given the two offenses involved, we expect the points to be over in this west coast matchup.  We see Illinois wining a close contest with UTSA but struggling to cover.   With UTSA’s ball control offense, we expect this to be a lower scoring affair with the points under the line.  We are taking BYU over Arizona, covering the spread, and the total points over the line.    And finally, a Sunbelt-CUSA battle between South Alabama and Southern Miss.  The consensus is the Jaguars will win at home and cover, with the points being over.
