Week 8 was a bumpy week for the Guru Panel. It started strongly but ended with some thuds as MAC and MWC upsets derailed a once promising prediction week.

For the year, the Guru panel has picked the winner correctly on 79% of 258 games. We have picked the cover correctly on 55% of games and the over/under correctly on 50% of games.

Week 9 in the Group of Five features 24 games total, 22 of those being conference matchups. There is one G5 Independent clash between Liberty and UMass and BYU hosts ACC member Virginia. Let’s get into the Panel’s picks for Week 9!

Week 9 opens with two Thursday night conference matchups. East Carolina hosts South Florida and Coastal Carolina welcomes in Troy. South Florida is riding high after a week 8 win, but the Guru Panel sees the Pirates in a tight, higher scoring affair. Coastal looks to rebound from their first loss of the season against Troy. Last year’s game between these two came down to the wire with the Chanticleers prevailing 42-38. While we expect the Chanticleers to prevail, we do believe it will be closer than the 19 point line.

Friday sees two more conference clashes beginning with Navy hosting Tulsa. The Midshipmen played #2 Cincinnati tough, having a chance to tie near the end of regulation before falling 27-20. The Golden Hurricane comes in on a 2 game winning streak. With the Golden Hurricane cresting and the Midshipmen in a bit of a doldrum after last week’s tough loss, we see Tulsa winning and covering the 10 point spread. In the late game, UNLV hosts Nevada in a renewal of the Silver State Rivalry. The Wolfpack lost a nail-biter last week and is looking to get back on track against the Rebels. We expect the Wolfpack to be motivated and easily handle the Rebels in a lower scoring game.

In other MWC action, the Guru Panel sees Boise bouncing back with a win over Colorado State and covering the 2.5 point spread. In the marquee MWC matchup of the week, we see San Diego State remaining unbeaten by beating a tough Fresno State squad in a game that will exceed the 46.5 point line.

In the Sunbelt, the Modern Day Hate rivalry renews with Georgia Southern hosting Georgia State. The Eagles are struggling this year, but we see them playing the Panthers tight but ultimately dropping their third in a row.

In CUSA action, we believe Western Kentucky will handle Charlotte but will not cover the large 18.5 point line. We are also very intrigued with Florida Atlantic hosting UTEP. The Miners come in 6-1, but the Owls are a step-up in competition. The Panel sees the Owls winning, but the Miners staying close in a lower scoring affair.

The MAC has only one game as they prepare for next week’s kickoff of weekday Maction! In that game we see Buffalo easily handling slumping Bowling Green.

BYU welcomes Virginia to Provo and the Gurus see this being a tough contest. However, we believe the Cougars will prevail and cover in a high-scoring matchup.
