Week 5 was full of surprises and the Gurus weren’t exempt. While we called a two upsets including Liberty over UAB and East Carolina over Tulane, we whiffed on a bunch of the others. For the week the Guru panel hit on 70% of the winners, by far our lowest performance of the year. We hit on 52% of covers and rebounded to hit on 64% of the over/under picks.
Week 6 sees a full slate of conference action, so let’s get to it.
We see a tight game between Houston and Tulane, with the Cougars winning and the points being over. Cincinnati is facing a resurgent Temple team at home. There will be a bit of an Irish hangover, but the Bearcats will win, but not cover the 29 point spread. The WMU Broncos welcome last year’s MAC champions Ball State who is fresh off an upset of previously undefeated Army. We see the Bronco’s balance attack holding off Ball State and covering the 11 point spread.
In a major rivalry match-up, BYU hosts struggling Boise State. The Broncos haven’t had 4 losses in a season since 2015, but the Gurus see it happening early this year. We are going with the Cougars to win and cover the 5 point spread. Kent State hosts Buffalo in an important MAC contest. We see too much Kent offense for the Bulls. The Golden Flashes win and cover.
In a suddenly interesting AAC tilt, UCF without star QB Dillon Gabriel host the suddenly hot East Carolina Pirates. The Gurus see UCF winning, but not covering the 10 point spread. In a key CUSA matchup UAB hosts Florida Atlantic. We see a tight contest, with UAB holding off the Owls, but not covering the spread.
Out west, a key contest in the Mountain West Mountain division has Air Force hosting unbeaten Wyoming. The Gurus believe the Cowboys have been playing with house money for a couple of weeks and see the Falcons coming out on top and covering the 5 point spread.
