2021 Week 2 Summary

Week 2 in the Group of Five (G5) saw the following breakdown of games:

  • 20 Power 5 (P5) versus G5
  • 13 G5 vs G5
  • 17 G5 versus FCS

The G5 struggled in week 2 against the P5 with only 2 wins against 18 losses.  BYU toppled #21 Utah and San Diego State beat Arizona. There were some close calls as Toledo took Notre Dame down to the wire and Appalachian State dropped a heartbreaking 2 point decision to Miami. Two G5 teams lost on late fields as East Carolina fell to South Carolina and Colorado State lost to Vanderbilt. Miami (OH) fell by five points to Minnesota and Tulsa dropped a five point decision to Oklahoma State. We are beyond “moral victories” in the Group of Five. The 8-38 record against the P5 won’t get the group of Five the recognition they deserve. We hope to see more wins in week 3.

On the brighter side, the G5 finished 15-1 for the week against FCS competition, with Ohio’s loss to Dusquene being the only blemish .  For the season, this performance moved the G5’s record to 36-5 against the FCS.

In the G5 games, the Mountain West was a perfect 5-0 for the week. The AAC went 4-2 and the Independents went 2-1. The Sunbelt wrapped up the week 2-3. CUSA had a tough week going 2-5 and the MAC dropped all three of its matchups.

Winners:

BYU. After graduation losses last year, expectations were not as high in Provo in 2021. But no one told the Cougars that as they moved to 2-0 taking down Utah and ending the Utes 9 game winning streak in their intrastate rivalry.

San Diego State. In a year they will playing home games 100 miles from campus, the Aztecs have opened 2-0 with a blowout win over Pac-12 Arizona. After a shaky start against New Mexico State, Jordan Brookshire played efficiently in leading the Aztec’s attack. Greg Bell had his second straight 100 yard rushing game and the Aztec’s look to make some noise this year.

Utah State. Blake Anderson arrived in Logan Utah looking at a major rebuild. Through two games, he is definitely making a difference. The Aggies are averaging over 500 yards and 37 points points per game after surpassing 16 points only once in 2020. The schedule gets a lot tougher from here, but so far the Aggie fans have to be pleased with what they are seeing from Anderson.

Losers:

UAB walked into a buzz-saw in Athens Georgia. The 49 point loss to the Bulldogs was the Blazer’s worse since resuming football in 2017. Georgia State was expected to be a dark horse in the Sunbelt in 2021 and have been outscored by 75 points in two lopsided losses to open the season. New Mexico State dropped their third straight in the Rio Grande Rivalry to New Mexico to fall to 0-3 on the season. The Tim Albin era in Ohio football has gotten off to a rough start as the Bobcats fell to 0-2 following an ugly loss to FCS Duquesne.

G5 Gurus Top 20 following Week 2.

Cincinnati remains the unanimous #1 after a win over FCS Murray State. BYU jumped to #2 after their upset of Utah and UCF moved into #3 with a dominating performance over Bethune Cookman. Liberty slid with a pedestrian win at Troy, while Coastal Carolina’s 27 point beatdown of Kansas vaulted them to #5.

Louisiana dropped 4 spots after a 3 point win over FCS Nicholls. App State and Toledo remained in the top 10 after their narrow losses to AP ranked teams.
