2021 Week 11 Summary

Week 11 in the Group of Five (G5) saw the following breakdown of games:

  • 29 G5 Conference Games
  • 2 G5 vs P5 Games
  • 2 G5 vs FCS Games

The MAC continued to provide some great mid-week action with three one-score games out of six and plenty of offense (70 points per game average).   We also saw some upsets, the biggest being Georgia State holding off Coastal Carolina 42-40, severely crippling the Chanticleers hopes for a second Sunbelt East title.  Elsewhere, UAB upset Marshall to stay in the CUSA West race, East Carolina upset Memphis to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2014, ODU shocked Florida Atlantic to keep its hopes of getting to bowl eligibility alive, and Utah State (a 2.5 point underdog) blasted San Jose State 48-17.

In Power5 games, Clemson overwhelmed UConn 44-7 and Alabama decimated NM State 59-3.

Winners

Northern Illinois.  The Huskies took a huge step towards winning the MAC West with a 30-29 victory over defending MAC champion Ball State.  A year after suffering through a 0-6 season, the Huskies stand at 7-3 and just need one more win to clinch the MAC West.

UTSA. For the first time in their brief (10 year) history, the Roadrunners have reached double digit wins when they completed a workman like victory over Southern Miss 27-17.  The Roadrunner’s previous best season was 2012 when they went 8-4.  The Roadrunners are 1 win away from the CUSA Championship game and currently are ranked #15 in the AP.  It has been a magical year for the Roadrunners.

Georgia State. Last year Coastal Carolina blasted the Panthers 51-0.  You can bet the Panthers circled this year’s game on the calendar.  After a disappointing start to the season, the Panthers have been playing their best ball of the year.  This culminated with an exciting 42-20 win over the Chanticleers in Conway, SC.  The Panthers now sit one win away from their third consecutive bowl trip.

Losers:

UMass.  The Minutemen dropped their second consecutive game to an FCS opponent.  4-5 Maine (now 5-5) dominated UMass 35-10 dropping the Minutemen to 1-9.  It was another uninspired performance from a team that simply should not be this bad.

G5 Gurus Top 20 following Week 11.

The G5 Guru Top 20 saw no changes in the top 5. Coastal Carolina dropped a 42-40 decision to Georgia State and tumbled 4 spots to #10. This allowed San Diego State, Appalachian State, SMU, and Fresno State to all move up one spot into positions 6, 7, 8, and 9 respectively.

The second 10 sees a similar situation as #11 Nevada dropped a 2 point decision to San Diego State and fell 4 spots to #15. This enabled Utah State, Army, Boise State, and Air Force to move up 1 spot. Liberty holds at #16 after a bye week and Northern Illinois moves into the 17 spot as they move another step closer to clinching the MAC West. UAB re-enters the ranking after beating Marshall at #18, and Western Kentucky makes its debut at #19 after its 5th straight victory. UCF holds onto the #20 spot, falling 3 slots after a loss to SMU.
