2021 G5 NFL Draft Recap

The 2021 NFL Draft was completed on May 1, 2021.  39 players from the Group of Five were selected during the seven rounds of the draft. 

Zach Wilson, the quarterback from Brigham Young led the way, being selected second overall by the New York Jets.  He was followed in the first round by Zaven Collins of Tulsa and Payton Turner of Houston.   Two G5 players heard their name called in the second round as Ritchie Grant of UCF and D’Wayne Eskridge of Western Michigan were selected. 

Cornerback and Offensive Tackle positions each had 7 total G5 players selected, followed closely by Wide receiver with 6. 

Turner was the first defensive end selected in the draft.  Wilson was the second quarterback selected, Collins the second linebacker selected, and Grant the second safety selected. 

The American Athletic conference led the way with 19 total selections, the G5 independents were second with 6 total selections (5 from BYU), Conference USA and the Mac each had 4 selections, while the Sunbelt and Mountain West each had 3 selections. 

Central Florida and Brigham Young each had 5 selections, followed by Cincinnati with 4, and Houston with 3.  Four teams had 2 selections.  In all, 22 of the 65 G5 teams had players selected in the draft.
